Quiz night

June 30, 2010

Hands on India is having a fundraising quiz night!

Join us for a night of fun and friendship to test your knowledge and become champion quiz team. Entry is $20.00 per person and the tickets can be bought from Emily Cummings (0438923406 or em-a-lee@hotmail.com). Teams are of 10 players, you can come as a ready formed team, or come by yourself to make up a team on the night. There are many great prices to be won, some nibbles will be provided, drinks can be purchased at the venue ($5.00 for a drink and $15.00-20.00 per a bottle) and feel free to BYO food.
The quiz night will be held at the Murdoch College on 20 August at 7pm for 7:30pm start.  Channel 9 newsreader Mr Greg Pearce will be the MC for the night!
Fundraised money will be used to purchase medical supplies and donated to the mission in Siliguri that we work with.  The mission takes care of the community development in the region.  They are responsible for the collection and care of orphan and abandoned children, many of whom have suffered from child trafficking and prostitution.
2009 Hands on India team fundraised enough money to buy a block of land. This year we are hoping to start building a school, so 120 children have the opportunity of education and better future.
We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you!

First sausage sizzle!

March 29, 2010

Thursday last week we had our first sausage sizzle fundraiser! With minor bumps on the way we managed to sell 300 sausages and fundraise a fantastic sum towards our goal. Thank you to all those who helped to organize this event, those who helped to sell in the hot afternoon sun and of course, to all those who bought a hot-dog!

Welcome

March 19, 2010

“Hands On India” is a Murdoch University Chiropractic student initiative, where students travel to India to provide chiropractic care to the people of Siliguri (North West Bengal).

Siliguri is a cosmopolitan city where the Marwari, Bengali, Bihari and Nepali people live together. Many of these people are from Bangladesh and have travelled across the border to seek refuge over the last 30 years. Despite many of them having lived there for more than a generation, they are not legally entitled to government education or health care.

A number of communities live along the riverbanks surrounding Siliguri, Northern India. They live in dire poverty and survive by earning a pittance from breaking river stones and selling the rubble to building contractors.

Their “back breaking” work coupled with appalling living conditions and inadequate health care constitute a bleak reality. A group of 22 chiropractic students and 9 qualified chiropractors will spend ten days, at eight makeshift field clinics, providing health care for all members of the community in need.

We are asking for your support in our endeavor to provide the people of these communities with the best possible care we can offer. This can be done through making donations or attending one of our fundraising events during the 2010 year. All money raised will go towards equipment, medical supplies, interpreters & transportation in Siliguri.

Thank you.
